Woodside on The Move, Inc.’s Housing Assistance programs provide services to approximately 1000 tenants, landlords, homeowners, and prospective home buyers of western Queens each program year. Outreach services are provided to local low income home owners and at individual apartment buildings, community meeting locations, housing court, and in other locations as determined by client needs throughout the target service area. Clients are primarily drawn from the western Queens area, which includes Woodside, Sunnyside, and Long Island City. In addition, many clients from neighboring areas of Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, and Corona in Community Boards 3 and 4 are also served in this project. Outreach will be accomplished through mailings, newsletters, meetings, flyers, word of mouth, referral, press releases, news articles, announcements, and networking both inside and outside of the target area.
Woodside On The Move’s Community Housing Assistance Project assist tenants with complaints and the formation and development of tenant associations. Problems may include but are not limited to: eviction proceedings, rent overcharges, heat and hot water, pest infestation, repair and maintenance problems, and housing discrimination. The project also provides for grant and subsidy applications, housing court assistance, landlord/tenant mediation services, tenant advocacy, housing information workshops, entitlement information and procurement, relocation assistance, and counseling and referral services for landlords, tenants and low income home owners. Educational topics may include but are not limited to the following: Medical Benefits & Entitlements, HEAP, DRIE, SCRIE Program Information, Rent Regulations Information, Tenant Legal Recourse Information, etc.
Additional services provided through the housing programs are temporary food pantry services to seniors in need, transportation and concerts/entertainment that target the senior population. All services are free of charge and based on community needs.
